'Axis of E' is a socio-political satire combining the cartoonish irreverence of 'South Park' with the insightful absurdity of 'The Daily Show.' Its juvenility belies a keen intelligence, exploring the themes of free will, lack of universal communication, and a global hubris which could eventually lead to the end of civilization. Playing on Bush's now infamous term 'axis of evil,' the title refers to a third, unknown axis intersecting both good and evil. It is on this axis where our action takes place.
The play opens in Argentina (looking suspiciously like Afghanistan), where Osama Ben Laden hears coded messages in his mother's chore requests, like a Saudi David Berkowitz. His army is a motley crew including special operative Annabelle 'Ann' Thrax and a Dutchman who found them on Friendster. STILL, they're
'ALL QAIDA
NOT KINDA QAIDA
NOT POINT SIX FIVE KAIDA
BUT FULL-BLOWN KAIDA!'
The group has kidnapped Michael Stevens, reporter from sensationalist media outlet FOX News, and brainwashed him into bringing 'Ossie' and crew to the Broadway opening of 'Mel Brooks' Al Qaeda: THE MUSICAL' where they will stage 'the biggest attack ever performed.' Across the ocean, self-proclaimed 'Greatest Presimedent' of the United States operates out of a playpen-like Oval Office complete with oversized furniture. Not only is he 'a hero and a cowboy', he keeps a personal clown. Meanwhile, Michael's sister in the CIA, Agent Stevens, goes on a personal mission to save him from becoming a martyr to Osama & Company's confused cause. NOTHING is sacred in the 'Axis of E's universe, where even the arrival of nuclear fallout's snow-like flurries is vivaciously sung.
